ADAP vs. AISH in Alberta: 2026 Guide

Alberta now has two disability income assistance programs: the longstanding Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program and the Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP), which became operational in July 2026. The programs serve different circumstances, and AISH has not ended.
AISH continues in Alberta
AISH remains available for eligible Albertans with a permanent and severe medical condition that substantially limits their ability to earn a living. Eligibility also includes age, residency and financial requirements. The Government of Alberta makes all eligibility and placement decisions.
What is ADAP?
ADAP provides financial, health, personal and employment supports for eligible Albertans with severe disabilities who are able to work. The program is designed to support people who can pursue employment while still needing disability-related assistance.
What changed in July 2026?
ADAP became operational.
AISH continued as a separate disability income assistance program.
New disability income assistance applicants began using one combined application for ADAP and AISH.
Eligible applicants are placed in the program that the Government of Alberta determines best fits their situation.
Existing AISH clients were to receive information specific to their file from the Government of Alberta.
