Many St. Albert families want an older parent or relative to stay in their own home for as long as it is safe and comfortable. The challenge is the in-between stage: they do not need nursing care, but regular company and a hand with everyday tasks would help. That is where non-medical companion support fits.

What companion care includes

Companion care is friendly, regular visits from a support worker. Depending on what you agree, a visit might include conversation, a walk, a game, help with a meal, reminders, light tidying or a lift to an appointment or the shops. It is non-medical, so it does not include nursing, medication administration or medical treatment. If there is an emergency, call 911.

Signs it may be time to look for support

  • They seem more withdrawn or have fewer visitors

  • Meals, mail or housekeeping are being missed

  • Appointments are forgotten or hard to get to

  • A family caregiver is stretched and needs relief

Our post on 7 little signs a little more support could make life better goes through these in more detail.

How to raise it with your parent

Start with what they want, not what you are worried about. Ask what a good week looks like and what they miss doing. Offer a short trial and let them meet the worker first. People accept help more readily when they stay in charge of the decisions.

Planning a simple routine

  • Pick regular days and times so visits become familiar

  • Agree a short list of tasks, such as lunch, a walk or errands

  • Share how to reach family and what to do if plans change

  • Review after a few weeks and adjust

Availability and cost

St. Albert sits just northwest of Edmonton. Whether we can help depends on your address, the hours you want and who is available, so we confirm details with you before promising anything. Many families pay privately for companion support, and some may be able to use other funding depending on eligibility. Our funding page explains the options.
