Avelora Life

Private Pay vs Funded Support in Alberta

Families may arrange non-medical support through an approved government-funded pathway, a private-pay agreement, or a combination of arrangements. A funded arrangement uses an approved Alberta program such as FSCD, PDD, Family Managed Services, or the Client Directed Home Care Invoicing Program — each with its own eligibility, agreement, documentation, and service rules. Under a private arrangement, the individual or family pays the provider directly under an agreed service plan and rate, which may offer a path when a person is waiting for funding or needs are outside an approved plan. The best route depends on eligibility, authorization, timing, service needs, and provider fit.

Private Pay vs Funded Support in Alberta

Funding is often the part families dread most. It is usually simpler than it looks once you see the options side by side.

Families may arrange non-medical support through an approved government-funded pathway, a private-pay agreement, or a combination. This guide explains how each works and which questions to ask, so you can choose with confidence.

The two routes

Funded or private: how they differ

A funded arrangement uses an approved Alberta program such as FSCD, PDD, Family Managed Services or the Client Directed Home Care Invoicing Program (CDHCI). Each has its own eligibility, agreement, documentation and service rules, and funding decisions stay with the program.

Under a private arrangement, the individual or family pays the provider directly under an agreed service plan and rate. It can be a path when someone is waiting for funding, or when needs fall outside an approved plan. Some families use both.

Questions

Questions about private pay and funded support

Can I use both funded and private support?

Many families arrange a combination. We can talk through how private support could sit alongside an approved plan.

Do you decide whether I qualify for funding?

No. Eligibility and funding decisions are made by the applicable Alberta program.

What is direct billing?

Where authorized and operational requirements are met, a provider may bill the program directly instead of the family paying upfront. Avelora Life is authorized for FSCD and PDD direct billing in South Calgary and Northern Alberta, subject to applicable program requirements, approved services, and individual funding agreements.

I am waiting on a funding decision. Can I start privately?

Private arrangements may be a path while you wait. We will talk through what is realistic before anything begins.

How soon can support start?

We cannot promise a date before we talk. Start dates depend on location, schedule, staffing and funding, and we will be straightforward about what is possible.
