If your child has a disability and you live in Grande Prairie, you may have heard about FSCD, short for Family Support for Children with Disabilities. Many parents are unsure what it covers, how it connects to respite and what to ask a provider before booking anything. This guide is a plain-language starting point.

It is general information, not advice about your own file. Your FSCD worker and the program's written rules always have the final word on what is approved.

What FSCD is

FSCD is an Alberta program for families raising a child with a disability. Depending on the child's needs and the family's agreement, supports can include respite and other services. Eligibility and what is funded are decided by the program, not by a service provider. The What is FSCD in Alberta page covers the basics.

Where respite fits

Respite is planned time off for the family while a worker supports the child. If your agreement includes respite, you can ask how it may be used and whether a provider suits it. If it does not, ask your worker how to raise it, or consider paying privately for some hours.

Questions to ask your FSCD worker

  • Does our agreement include respite, and in what form?

  • How many hours or what budget does it cover, and for what period?

  • Can we choose our own provider, and what do they need to give you?

  • What paperwork or reporting is needed?

Questions to ask a provider

  • Is your support non-medical, and what does a visit include?

  • How do you match a worker to a child, and can we meet first?

  • Can you cover our address and the hours we need?

  • How do you handle changes to the plan?

Grande Prairie is in northwestern Alberta, so we always confirm your address and hours before promising anything. See how this works locally on our Grande Prairie respite and disability support page, and our FSCD respite and child support page.

Compare the programs

FSCD is for children, while PDD and Family Managed Services are for adults. Our guide to FSCD vs PDD in Alberta explains the difference. If your agreement has just been approved, your next five steps is a useful read.

If FSCD does not cover it

Some families combine program funding with private pay. Our funding page sets out the options without promising approval, and arranging respite care in Grande Prairie walks through the practical steps.
