10 Questions to Ask a Respite Provider in Lethbridge

Choosing a respite provider is a big decision, because the person you hand over to will spend time with someone you love. If you live in Lethbridge, these ten questions will help you compare providers calmly and spot the one that fits your household.
1. Is your support non-medical, and what does a visit include?
Respite is usually company, help with routines, outings and activities. It should not be confused with nursing, therapy or emergency care. A good provider explains clearly what is included and what is not, and tells you to call 911 in an emergency.
2. Can you cover my address and my hours?
Lethbridge is in southern Alberta, and distance and timing matter. Ask whether the provider can cover your address, your preferred days and your busiest times, and whether that is a promise or only a maybe. We confirm availability with you first before anything is agreed.
3. Who will support the person, and can we meet first?
An introduction before the first visit helps everyone feel comfortable. Ask how workers are matched to people and what happens if the match is not right.
4. How do you handle changes and cancellations?
Plans change. Ask what notice is needed, what happens if a worker is unavailable and how you will be told.
5. What will you ask me before we start?
A provider who asks about routines, interests, communication and what a good day looks like is planning around the person, not just filling a slot.
6. How do you work with funding?
Families may use FSCD for a child, PDD or Family Managed Services for an adult, private pay, or a mix. Ask how invoicing works and what paperwork the provider needs. No provider can promise a program will approve you. Our funding page sets out the options.
7. What are the costs, in writing?
Ask for rates and any extra charges in writing before you commit, so there are no surprises. Our guide to respite care costs in Alberta lists what usually affects the price.
8. How will we review how it is going?
Look for a provider who will check in after the first few visits and adjust the plan as needs change.
9. What do you do if something goes wrong?
Ask who to call, how concerns are handled and how quickly you will hear back.
10. Can we start small?
A few hours a week is a reasonable way to begin. You can add more once you know it works.
