How Much Does Respite Care Cost in Alberta? Funding, Rates and Questions to Ask

Respite care can give a family caregiver dependable time to rest, work, attend appointments or care for other responsibilities. But before arranging support, most families need a clear answer to a practical question: How much will respite care cost?
There is no single Alberta-wide price for private respite care. The cost depends on the person’s needs, the schedule, the service location, the provider’s scope and whether an approved funding arrangement applies. A useful provider should explain these factors clearly before support begins.
This guide will help you understand what affects the cost, which funding pathways may be relevant and what to ask during a consultation.

What affects the cost of respite care in Alberta?
1. The type of support requested
A visit built around companionship and familiar activities may be planned differently from support involving multiple community stops, complex routines or extensive preparation. Describe the actual tasks you expect instead of relying only on a service label.
2. The length and frequency of visits
Providers may have minimum visit lengths. A recurring weekly schedule may also be staffed differently from occasional or short-notice support. Ask whether the quoted rate changes for evenings, weekends, holidays or urgent requests.
3. Where support takes place
Support may happen at home, in the community or through a combination of both. Travel distance, transportation, parking and mileage can affect the total cost. Confirm whether these expenses are included or billed separately.
4. The person’s routines and support needs
A responsible provider needs enough information to decide whether the requested support is safe and within its scope. Communication preferences, mobility, behaviours, allergies, community activities and the level of supervision required may influence planning and staffing.
5. Worker matching and availability
The right match matters. Location, schedule, interests, experience and communication style can all affect how quickly consistent support can begin. Avoid any provider that promises immediate availability before understanding the person’s needs.
Ask for the complete price—not only the hourly rate
Before agreeing to service, request a written explanation of:
• The hourly or visit rate
• Minimum visit length
• Evening, weekend or holiday rates
• Mileage, transportation or parking costs
• Cancellation charges
• Documentation or administrative fees, if any
• How invoices are issued and when payment is due
• What happens if the regular worker is unavailable
The lowest advertised rate is not always the lowest total cost. Clear scope, reliable communication and appropriate worker matching can prevent disruptions that cost families time and energy.
Can funding help pay for respite care?
Depending on eligibility and the individual agreement or plan, Alberta families may use an approved funding pathway or private pay.
FSCD
Family Support for Children with Disabilities respite and child support may be relevant for eligible families raising a child with a disability. The family’s agreement determines which services, hours, rates and expenses are approved. Confirm unclear terms with the assigned FSCD worker before hiring a provider or assuming reimbursement.

PDD and Family Managed Services
Eligible adults may receive PDD-related support through an agency arrangement or Family Managed Services. The approved plan and funding agreement determine what can be purchased and how records, staffing and payments must be handled.

Private pay
Private pay can offer flexibility when public funding is unavailable, pending or does not cover the requested schedule. Ask for the full rate and service terms in writing so the family can compare options fairly.
Avelora Life can discuss whether a request fits its non-medical services and billing process, but it cannot approve funding, interpret an individual agreement authoritatively or guarantee reimbursement.
A practical example
Two families may both request “respite,” but the plans can be very different.
One family may need a consistent three-hour visit at home each week while a parent attends an appointment. Another may need a support worker to help an adult prepare for, travel to and participate in a community activity. The schedule, travel, required preparation and agreed responsibilities are different, so the total price may differ as well.
The best estimate begins with a clear description of the real routine.
