Senior Companion Care in Grande Prairie: Helping an Older Relative Stay at Home

Many families in Grande Prairie want an older parent, grandparent or neighbour to keep living in their own home as long as it is safe and comfortable. The hard part is the in-between stage: nursing care is not needed yet, but regular company and help with everyday tasks would make a real difference. Non-medical companion support is designed for exactly that stage.
What companion care includes
Companion care is friendly, regular visits from a support worker. Depending on what you agree, a visit might include conversation, a walk, cards or a puzzle, help preparing a meal, reminders, light tidying or getting out for errands and appointments. It does not include nursing, medication administration or medical treatment. If there is an emergency, call 911.

When families start to look
The person spends most days alone
Meals, laundry or housework are slipping
Appointments are missed or hard to reach
A family caregiver needs regular relief
Someone has recently come home from hospital and routines need rebuilding
Think about the season and the schedule
In a northern city, winter can mean fewer outings and more time indoors, which is when company and a regular visit matter most. Think about the time of day, travel and whether the person is more alert in the morning or afternoon.

Making the first visit easy
Introduce the worker over a cup of tea rather than a formal meeting
Let the person lead the conversation and the pace
Agree a short, simple list of tasks to start with
Check in after a few weeks and change what is not working
